The Venue: Rotterdam

Rotterdam Haven   Rotterdam will host the EYE Spring conference of 2012. Also referred to as the Gateway to Europe, Rotterdam is well known for its huge, modern port. The city is strategically located at the heart of a massive rail, road, air and inland waterway distribution system extending throughout Europe. The port is the largest in Europe and has been the world’s busiest port from 1962 to 2004. From world war II, Rotterdam was the first port to make use of high-tech container handling systems. This led to greatly reduced transport costs, and supported the international trade. These facts make the city a perfect location for the EYE conference with the theme ‘Engineering connections’.

Being such an important European metropole, Rotterdam has always been one of the main centers of the Dutch shipping industry. Already  in 1602 a part of the world’s first multinational, the VOC, was located in this city. Since then, many other important multinationals have followed. Today all sorts of multinationals in the oil- and gas industry, chemicals, transport, shipping and other industries are represented in Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is waiting for Europe’s young engineers to come and explore it’s engineering highlights!
